PACIFICA, Calif. – The public is invited to learn the warning signs of Alzheimer’s disease and the latest in Alzheimer’s research at the September 10 meeting of the San Mateo County Commission on Aging in Pacifica.
Ruth Gay, the director of public policy and advocacy for the Alzheimer’s Association of Northern California and Northern Nevada, will be the featured speaker. Her presentation, “Alzheimer’s Disease: From Out of the Shadows,” is free and open to everyone.

Despite recent promising advances in research, one in eight older Americans is living with Alzheimer’s disease and Alzheimer’s is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States.
“Here in San Mateo County we have a high number of residents who are seniors and we have a much higher proportion of older adults than the state average,” said Denis O’Sullivan, chair of the San Mateo County Commission on Aging. “We certainly hope that anyone with a loved one who is of a certain age will come to this very important meeting to learn from an expert in a disease that touches so many lives.”

The special presentation on Alzheimer’s disease is part of a series of commission meetings being held at senior centers throughout San Mateo County to make it easier for all seniors to participate. As the presentation is part of a regularly scheduled commission meeting, other important issues related to seniors will be on the agenda and discussed.
The San Mateo County Commission on Aging works to maintain, enhance and improve the quality of life for seniors through the promotion of independence and self-sufficiency, mental and physical health, and social and community involvement. Commissioners are appointed by the Board of Supervisors.
